"한때 사랑이 있었습니다. 그건 아주 오래 전의 일이었습니다…" 호세 펠리치아노의 < once There Was a Love >는 누군가의 사랑과 미련, 추억을 담은 슬픈 노래로 세월이 흘렀음에도 많은 이들이 공감하면서 기억하는 명곡이다. 세월이 흘러도 선명해지는 추억이 있다지만 대부분의 사랑이 세월이 흐른 후 오늘 마주친다 해도 그때의 감정과 같을 수가 있을까? 내게 그런 만남이 있다면 "한때 사랑했습니다. 그러나 그건 아주 오래 전의 일이었습니다... 이러지나 않을런지... (천년여왕 kyoulhee) 호세 펠리치아노는 1945년 푸에르토 리코 출신으로 선천적 맹인으로 태어났다. 9살부터 기타를 배우기 시작해 18살에 뉴욕에 진출 자신의 신체적 한계를 극복하고 스페니쉬 할렘에 있는 푸에르트 리코 극장에서 데뷔하게 된다. 1963년 RCA 레코드사에 발탁되어 본격적 활동을 하게 되는데 소울 풍의 동양적 애수가 풍기는 목소리와 뛰어난 어쿠스틱 기타 솜씨로 많은 인기를 모았으며 1968년 그래미 시상식에서 최우수 남성가수상, 최우수 신인 남성가수상을 수상했다. 여러 히트곡이 있지만 우리 나라에서는 <Once There was a Love>와 <Rian>이 가장 인기가 높지 않나 생각된다. 2011년 9월 29일 서울 시청앞 광장 특설무대에서 있었던 "2011 장애인 문화 예술축제"에서 공연하기도 했었다. 그날 호세 펠리치아노는 "사회가 당신을 어떻게 대하든지 자신의 길을 가라"고 당부했다고 한다 호세 펠리치아노는 그래미상에 무려 17번이나 노미네이트돼 8개 상을 수상했으며 지난 1964년 1집 앨범 <The voice and Guitar of Jose Feliciano> 발표 이후 지난해까지 47년간 50여장이 넘는 앨범을 발표했다. 푸에르토리코 출신인 호세 펠리치아노는 9살 때 뉴욕 브롱스에 있는 푸에르토리코 극장에서 연주를 시작했으며 라틴 아메리칸으로는 처음으로 영어권 음악시장에 진출해 미국 음악산업에 영향을 끼친 뮤지션으로 평가받고 있다. 그는 1996년 미국 최고의 음악잡지인 빌보드(Billboard)지에서, 지난해에는 미국 최고의 대중음악상 시상식인 그래미 시상식에서 최고의 영예인 '평생공로상'을 수상했다. 흥겨운 라틴 기타 선율과 감미로운 팝 선율로 한국을 비롯한 전 세계에서 선풍적인 인기를 끌었으며 <Once there was a love>, <Rain>, <Che Sera>, <Gypsy>, <Feliz Navida> 등 주옥같은 히트곡을 보유하고 있다. This recording gathers twoof his greatest albums in a career that is as legendary as the artist himself. <10 TO 23> released in 1969 and <FIREWORKS> released in 1970, are milestones in Feliciano's diverse and colorful career. Every song on these two albums are bonafide classics and there are no fillers. What you will hear is Feliciano at the zenith of his creative genius. For years his fans have written (practically pleaded) with the various record companies that he has recorded with throughout his career to release his English albums from the 60's and 70's but nothing ever came of it. Apparently all of the letters and pleas from his countless followers not to mention the demand to release the older Feliciano material has finally soften the hearts of the top record executives to release (at a very slow rate I might add) his older albums. Little by little a few of his albums from the 70's are turning up on CD and that is great news for Jose Feliciano fans and people in general who enjoy and appreciate his "special kind" of music.
